Teaching & Learning Model

Our Explicit Instructional Approach

At Ascot Vale West Primary School, we are committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-informed teaching grounded in the Science of Learning and Direct and Explicit Instruction.

Our whole-school Instructional Model ensures consistency, clarity and precision in every classroom. Teaching is deliberate, structured and carefully sequenced to reduce cognitive load and support the retention and transfer of knowledge and skills.

Teachers explicitly teach new learning through clear learning intentions and success criteria, step-by-step modelling, worked examples and guided practice. Students are provided with structured opportunities to practise, apply and consolidate their learning to build accuracy, fluency and deep understanding.

Instruction is systematic and data-informed. Teachers frequently check for understanding, provide timely feedback and adjust instruction responsively to ensure all students are progressing.

Our Instructional Model is aligned with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) and embedded within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework.

  • Tier 1: High-quality, explicit classroom instruction for all students, with differentiation embedded through responsive teaching and formative assessment.
  • Tier 2: Targeted, small-group intervention based on identified need, designed to complement and strengthen classroom instruction.
  • Tier 3: Intensive, individualised support informed by diagnostic data and delivered with increased frequency and precision.

This alignment ensures that every student receives the level of support they need, at the right time, while maintaining consistency in instructional language, routines and expectations across the school.

At AVWPS, teaching is intentional, explicit and focused on ensuring every student experiences success.
