Sounds-Write Phonics
Our Phonics – Sounds-Write
Across Prep to Year 6 phonics instruction is delivered through Sounds-Write, a high-quality synthetic phonics program based on the science of reading. Sounds-Write is taught with fidelity through clear learning intentions and success criteria aligned to a structured and cumulative scope and sequence
Students are explicitly taught to:
- Develop phonological and phonemic awareness hearing, identifying and manipulating sounds in words
- Master sound–spelling correspondences
- Apply the strategies of blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation
- Build accuracy, automaticity and fluency in both reading and spelling
Teachers use daily review, formative assessment and frequent checks for understanding to ensure all students are secure before moving forward
Our MTSS Framework in Literacy
Our literacy instruction is embedded within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports:
- Tier 1 – Core Classroom Instruction
High-quality, explicit phonics instruction for all students, delivered Monday to Friday in structured one-hour sessions. Instruction is systematic, responsive and data-informed, with differentiation embedded within classroom practice - Tier 2 – Supplemental Intervention
Evidence-based small-group intervention for students requiring additional consolidation or extension. Groups are flexible and data-driven, with progress monitoring guiding regrouping and instructional focus - Tier 3 – Intensive Intervention
Highly targeted, individualised support informed by diagnostic assessment and ongoing progress monitoring. Education Support staff and Speech Pathologists work with small groups and individual students to provide increased intensity and precision of instruction
This aligned approach ensures consistency of instructional language, routines and expectations across all tiers of support. At AVWPS, every student receives explicit, systematic and responsive instruction ensuring strong foundations in reading and long-term academic success.
