Sounds-Write Phonics
Introducing our SWPBS Matrix at Ascot Vale West Primary School
At Ascot Vale West Primary School, we work hard to create a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where every child feels supported and ready to learn. Our school values respect, responsibility, inclusion and curiosity are at the heart of everything we do.
To help bring these values to life, we use School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS). This is a whole school approach that helps children understand what positive behaviour looks like and supports them to make good choices throughout the school day.
Our SWPBS Matrix shows what our school values look like in action in different areas of the school, such as classrooms, playgrounds and shared spaces. It helps answer the question What does respect, responsibility, inclusion and curiosity look like at Ascot Vale West?
Teachers will use the matrix to talk with students about expectations, model positive behaviour and acknowledge when children are making great choices. These expectations are taught just like any other part of learning and are revisited regularly.
By using the same language and expectations across the school, we help children feel confident, safe and supported. We value the partnership between school and home and appreciate families supporting these expectations with their children.
We look forward to continuing to work together to help all students live out our school values every day.
As a part of our Direct and Explicit Instruction, teachers at Ascot Vale West acknowledge and explicitly teach the five key concepts of effective reading; Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension. Through whole class instruction, small group focus and individual conferences, our students Learn to Read and Read to Learn.
Students develop their phonological awareness, the ability to hear and manipulate sounds, and phonemic awareness, their knowledge of letter/sound correspondences through Sounds-Write lessons. Sounds-Write is a high quality synthetic phonics program based on the science of reading. Students are taught to apply the strategies of blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation in order to become fluent readers and spellers.
